A guide for families / Chapter 3

The full value of a life
Georgia measures what the person lost: the rest of their life.

Georgia law allows recovery of the "full value of the life of the decedent, as shown by the evidence." It’s measured from the point of view of the person who died, not just the family’s loss.
| Economic value | Intangible value |
|---|---|
| Income they would have earned, benefits, household work | The value of living: watching children grow, friendships, faith, plans, simple joys |
How it’s shown
- Pay records, tax returns and work history
- Family, friends, coworkers and community members who knew them
- Photos, videos and stories that show who they were
- Sometimes an economist for the economic part
No amount of money replaces a person. But Georgia requires a value, and families are entitled to a fair one.
